Basic Gun Safety Code

Always

  • Carry your gun muzzle down
  • Prove a gun uncocked/unloaded:
  • Before handling it - including getting it out and putting it away
  • Before passing it to anyone
  • Before leaving the firing point
  • Before changing targets

Never

  • Point a gun at anyone, not even in jest
  • Load a gun anywhere other than on the firing point
  • Point a gun anywhere other than down the range
  • Finger the trigger until the gun is aimed at the target
  • Handle anyone else's gun without their permission

Shooting

On the indoor range use:

  • pellet catchers/steel boxes and white curtain for air guns
  • red Linatex curtain for rim fire guns
  • Shoot only straight down the range - No Cross range shooting
  • Break-barrel rifles - hold the barrel during loading, to avoid injury in the event of accidental discharge
  • Under lever rifles - hold the lever during loading, to avoid injury in the event of accidental discharge
  • Magazines on multi-shot guns MUST be removed when changing targets
  • In the event of a malfunction put your weapons down and alert the Range Officer. With rim fire ammunition do not immediately attempt to remove the ammunition
  • WHEN CEASE FIRE IS CALLED - ALL GUNS MUST BE DISCHARGED SAFELY¬†before anyone goes forward of the firing line
  • During cease fire/target changing you must NOT sight your gun down-range or attempt to cock the gun

General Behaviour

  • Do not dry fire guns anywhere other than down the range over the firing line
  • Do not aim or sight guns anywhere other than down the range over the firing line

Footnote

Carry guns muzzle down, pointing safely at the ground. A rifle carried muzzle up, or slung over the shoulder is safe until you bend down, then your rifle can point accidentally into someone's face. This is not acceptable, nor is a rifle cradled in the arm, carried across the body horizontally, or carried by its scope.
